‘Sur Sagar’ is a one-of-a-kind collection of Indian Classical compositions (Ragas), their descriptions, notations, as well as notations of popular Hindi movie songs based on those Ragas. The book was written to help people who wish to learn Indian music and can speak Hindi language but cannot read the Hindi script. Since the entire Indian Classical music literature is written in traditional indigenous scripts like Hindi, many find it hard to learn traditional Indian Classical music in the modern age. ‘Sur Sagar’ attempts to tear through this language barrier by scripting Indian Classical music and related film songs in English (Roman script).

The book contains Indian Classical Ragas as well as popular movie tracks, composed by great music directors of the Indian Music Industry, on those Ragas. It has detailed descriptions and notations of 14 Indian Classical Ragas, in addition to notations of 28 movie songs based on them and a collation of about 140 Raga based Hindi movie songs. Studying popular culture songs based on Ragas often makes these Ragas more relatable and enjoyable for the students. This has been a revelation to the author over an extensive teaching career in various Indian styles of singing – Indian classical music, folk songs, film songs, geet (non-film songs), ghazals (Urdu poetry) and bhajans (devotional songs). In this book the author attempts to simplify the complexities of Indian classical music making the book useful even for beginners.

‘Sur Sagar’ is a culmination of the author’s profound knowledge, passion and decades of persistence to meet the needs of students of music. She has taught innumerable international students of Indian origin over the span of her 35 year long career. Many of these students request Raga notations, descriptions, and other details in the English script. The collection thus created is catalogued in ‘Sur Sagar’, which is the first volume in a series.
