Somebody handed you a file and asked a question. You got an answer. You’re just not sure it’s the right one.
You can use a spreadsheet. You can sort, filter, total a column, probably knock out a VLOOKUP without looking it up. That was never the problem. The problem is the twenty minutes afterwards. You don’t know whether to include the blank rows. You don’t know if that one enormous order is real or a typo. You don’t know whether your total should match what Finance said, or how you’d explain it if it doesn’t. So you send it with a slight tightening in your chest and hope nobody checks.
That feeling isn’t a sign you’re bad at this. It’s a sign you’ve noticed something true. Between “a number” and “an answer you can defend” sits a set of specific, learnable habits that nobody ever taught you. You got taught software instead which button makes the chart and then wondered why the output still didn’t feel trustworthy.
This book teaches the habits. No statistics. No Greek letters. No software to buy, install or learn. Every dataset is printed inside the book, and every figure was computed from those printed tables and checked before publication. If your total doesn’t match, one of us made a mistake and Chapter 16 is about working out which.
Inside, you’ll learn to:Turn “can you have a look at how sales are doing?” into a question you can actually answerProfile a file you’ve never seen and know within ten minutes whether you can trust itSpot the defects that quietly corrupt totals: duplicates, blanks, two date formats in one column, weights in grams sitting next to weights in kilogramsJoin two files without inventing money and catch it in five seconds when you doChoose a metric, and say out loud what it hidesTell a real trend from a seasonal pattern, a partial month, or one unusual rowCompare two teams or two channels fairly, when the obvious comparison flatters the wrong oneReconcile your number against somebody else’s and close the gap exactlyCheck your own work three independent ways in five minutesUse AI tools as an assistant without letting an invented figure into your reportFix a report that worked last month and stopped working this monthWrite the one-page summary that gets acted on instead of “noted”Then you do it for real. A complete capstone: four dirty files, a board meeting on Thursday, one line of instruction, and four things that go wrong along the way. No scaffolding, no worked steps. It’s the exercise that tells you whether you can actually do this.
Who this is for
Anyone who has been handed a spreadsheet and a deadline. Junior analysts who can operate the tools but not yet think with them. People returning to work after a break. Any team that has the same argument every month because nobody can agree what the numbers say.
You need a spreadsheet Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice Calc plus pen and paper. That’s the whole setup. Optional sidebars show the same work in SQL and Python; skip every one of them and nothing is missing.
What you won’t find here
So nothing dates. No software to learn. No statistics beyond adding up and dividing. And no promise that your manager will notice though it happens more often than you’d expect.
Every chapter runs the same loop: the problem, why it matters, the idea in plain English, a worked example, your turn, what usually goes wrong, how to fix it, and a quiz with the working shown. You’ll make mistakes on purpose, because the skill that matters isn’t producing a number when everything works. It’s noticing when one has gone wrong, finding it, and fixing it.
