Deval — I first heard this story as a child. In our region it was passed from mouth to mouth, never written down.
In 2026, before I began writing it, I went back and asked the people of my region once more. They still remembered it — a little of it, in pieces. But with time, stories like this one are slowly disappearing.
I have gathered those scattered tellings and shaped them into this book.
And this story begins with Satish.
Satish’s life is caught between mounting debt, a half-built house, and the taunts of his neighbours. His job pays half of what it once did, his son’s school fees are overdue, and the jars in the kitchen stand empty. It is at exactly this moment that his old friend Rajesh arrives — with an expensive car, a gold chain, and a secret that turned his fortune around overnight.
The secret has a name — Deval.
Carved in a lone hut on the Nilgiri mountain, it is a creature of wood that grants every wish.
