कुंभ मेला दुनिया में आयोजित किया जाने वाला सबसे बड़ा धार्मिक समारोह है, और इस दौरान दुनिया का सबसे विषाल जनसमूह यहां इकट्ठा होता है। इसके परिणामस्वरूप यहां एक आभासी मेगासिटी भी उभर कर सामने आता हैं। कुंभ मेले की अपनी सड़कें, पांटून पुल और टेंट होते हैं जो आवास एवं आध्यात्मिक बैठकों के लिए स्थल की भूमिका निभाते हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त यहां अस्पतालों, शौचालयों और टीकाकरण क्लिनिकों के तौर पर सामाजिक संरचनाएं भी बनाई जाती हैं, जो बिल्कुल किसी वास्तविक शहर की तरह काम करती हैं। ये कुंभ नगरी लगभग 70 लाख लोगों के काम आती है जो यहां 55 दिनों तक इकट्ठे रहते हैं। इसके अलावा यहां एक करोड़ से 2 करोड़ की संख्या में ऐसे लोग भी यहां आते हैं जो स्नान वाली 6 प्रमुख तिथियों को 24 घंटे तक का प्रवास करते हैं। 2013 में हार्वर्ड यूनिवर्सिटी की, कई विषयों से ताल्लुक रखने वाली टीम ने इस महाआयोजन की तैयारियों और इसमें होने वाले समारोह पर शोध किया। एक शहर के तौर पर इस मेले का यह पहला सिलसिलेवार अध्ययन था और इसमें सामाजिक मुद्दों, विविधताओं और उस लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था जैसे मुद्दों को भी शामिल किया गया, जो इस शहर के निर्माण के दौरान सामने आते हैं। इस नगर में किसी एकल व्यक्ति के लिए भी स्थान होता है और व्यक्तियों के समूहों के लिए भी। इस संस्करण में इसी व्यापक शोध के परिणामों को प्रस्तुत किया जा रहा है। इसमें शहर के नक्षे, इसकी हवाई तस्वीरें, इसके विस्तृत रेखाचित्र और शानदार तस्वीरें भी हैं जो कुंभ मेले के दौरान बनने वाले इस अल्पकालिक महानगर की भव्यता को दर्शाती हैं।Kumbh Mela is the largest religious celebration on Earth and the biggest public gathering in the world. The resulting settlement is a virtual mega city. The kumbh Mela deploys its own roads, pontoon bridges as well as tents serving as residences and venues for spiritual meetings and social infrastructure such as hospitals, sanitation outlets and vaccination clinics—all replicating the functions of an actual city. The pop-up settlement seamlessly serves up to seven million people, who gather for 55 days and an additional flux of 10 to 20 million people, who come for 24-hour cycles on the six main bathing dates. In 2013, a team from Harvard University, representing faculty from multiple disciplines, researched the large-scale event from its preparation to the actual celebration itself. This was the first systematic study on the Mela as a city: A planned entity and covers issues of social inclusion, diversity and even democracy that emerge under the framework of a Neutralizing grid of roads that is the organizing armature of the city. This subdivision of the city forms clusters of freedom and facilitates space for individual and Group expression. The volume presents the comprehensive research findings and includes city maps, aerial images, analytical drawings and photographs of this spectacular ephemeral mega city for the kumbh Mela.
