Raging Bull, directed by Martin Scorsese, is an American biographical sports drama movie based on the true story of Jake LaMotta, an Italian American middleweight boxer and has been adapted from his memoir Raging Bull: My Story. It stars Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta, Joe Pesci as Joey LaMotta and Cathy Moriarty as Vikki LaMotta. The movie was nominated for eight Academy Awards, out of which it won two: Best Film Editing and Best Actor. De Niro won 3 more Best Actor Awards at different awards ceremonies and the movie was voted as the Best Film of 1980 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
The entire movie is set in a flashback of Jake Lamotta’s life. Jake, after his first loss in 1941 at a major boxing match against James Reeves, gets his shot at the middleweight title, with help from his brother Joey, who has a connection in the Mafia, Salvy Batts. Jake, who is already married, starts an illicit relation with Vikki, who he later marries. In 1943, Jake defeats Sugar Ray Robinson and has a rematch after three weeks but the jury, in spite of Jake’s performance, decides in favor of Robinson, supposedly because Robinson was to enlist in the US Army. Joey spots Vikki with Salvy in a restaurant and gets into a fight him assuming they are having an affair, when Vikki discloses to Joey that she is giving up on Jake because of his possessive and jealous behavior. Jake is suspended from the board after being suspected of throwing a fight when Jake decides to not fight back in a match with Billy Fox but he is reinstated later and wins the middleweight championship. After a year passes, Jake blames Joey and gets into a fight with him for having an affair with Vikki when he finds out that Joey had a fight with Salvy over Vikki, however Joey refuses an answer and insults Jake. Their split results in Jack’s career plummeting.
Scorsese’s Raging Bull has been released by MGM and is rated U/A. The movie has a run time of 129 minutes and is in DVD format.
