Discover the enchanting Bhapang Zarbagali, a rare single-stringed percussion instrument from Rajasthan’s rich musical heritage. Also known as Zarbagali or Khamak, this fascinating instrument is affectionately called the ‘talking drum’ by the Mewati community of Alwar district. Crafted with wood and leather, this 23 cm long instrument features a unique gut string passing through a skin parchment, creating distinctive sounds with varying pitches. The instrument demands skilful hand movements to produce mesmerising slides, oscillations, and grace notes that form haunting melodies. Traditionally used to accompany devotional songs (Bhajans) and poetry, the Bhapang is played by positioning it under the armpit. This versatile instrument, measuring 15 cm in diameter, is also known by different names across India – as Chongar in Maharashtra, Apang in Gujarat, and Tumba in Punjab.
